Why it matters

Writing on someone else’s platform is writing in a rented room.

If your work lives on a social network or a publishing platform, three things are true. The platform decides who sees it. The platform can change the rules, the layout or the reach without asking. And if the platform goes away, or you fall out with it, your archive goes with it. Plenty of writers have learnt this the hard way. Your own site is the one place online where none of that can happen.

A blog of your own also does something platforms cannot: it gets found. Search engines send readers to well-written pages on real websites for years after they were published. A post on a platform is buried in a day. Over time, a site of your own becomes an archive that keeps working for you, and a newsletter list attached to it becomes an audience you actually own.

We build blogs to be read. Fast pages, generous type, no clutter, and a structure that search engines understand, so each post has a chance to be found. Categories that make sense, an about page that makes readers want to stay, a newsletter signup that is present but not pushy. Then we hand it over so that publishing a post is as simple as writing it.

What a reader wants from a blog, whether or not they could say it.

Ease, trust and a reason to come back. The design serves all three.

  • Let me read without fighting the page

Good type, sensible line length, no popups over the text, fast to load. Readability is the whole design.

  • Who is this, and why should I trust them?

An about page with a real face and a real story, and a consistent voice throughout. Readers stay for people.

  • How do I hear from you again?

A newsletter signup that is easy to find and easy to ignore, and categories that let a reader who liked one post find the next.

The pages a blog needs.

A strong home, a clean archive, and a way to keep readers.

  • Home

Your latest and your best, a line about what you write and for whom, and a way to sign up for your newsletter.

  • Posts

Each post a fast, readable page with the right structure for search, sharing images, and related posts beneath.

  • Categories

Your subjects, organised so a reader can follow a thread. Kept to a handful, so they mean something.

  • About

Who you are, why you write, what readers can expect. The page that turns a visitor into a regular.

  • Newsletter

Signup connected to the service you use, present on every post without covering the words.

  • Work with me

If you take commissions, speaking or partnerships: what you do, who you have done it for, how to ask.

  • Search and archive

A search box and a browsable archive, so nothing you wrote is ever lost.

  • Contact

A simple form and your preferred places to be found. Readers and editors alike.

Send us three of your favourite pieces and a photograph of yourself, and we will build around them.

Get started now

From apply to live in four simple steps.

  1. 1

    Apply in two minutes

Tell us what your business does, what pages you need, and who you are trying to reach. Send any photos or wording you have, or leave that part to us.

  2. 2

    We design your site

Real people plan and design it around your business and your offer. Never a template, and built to work properly on phones from the start.

  3. 3

    You review it

You see the real thing before anyone else does, and tell us what to change in plain English. Nothing goes live until you are happy with it.

  4. 4

    We launch it

We handle the technical side of going live, check everything works as it should, and get you set up to be found. From there the site is yours to keep.

That is the whole process.

The Local Notebook

A polished home for articles, guides, newsletters, and personal brands.

Built by us

A blog we built.

The Local Notebook needed a home that felt as considered as the writing: fast, generous type, clear categories, and a newsletter signup that does not shout. Every post is built to be found and read.

  • Readable type and line length on every screen
  • Category structure that search engines follow
  • Newsletter signup on every post, never over the text
  • An archive that keeps every piece findable
